On February 22, 2025, Oleksandr Slyvchuk, Coordinator of the Spain and Latin America Cooperation Program, appeared on Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE to provide an in-depth analysis of the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war, the challenges of achieving a just peace, and Ukraine’s role in European security.
As Ukraine marks three years since the full-scale Russian invasion, Slyvchuk emphasized that despite ongoing military pressure, Russia is not winning this war. He highlighted Ukraine’s resilience, stating that the country has successfully halted Russia’s advances and remains committed to pushing back against aggression rather than making territorial concessions.
Slyvchuk also addressed the evolving stance of the United States, particularly in light of Donald Trump’s return to the political stage. He noted that Trump’s approach to international politics has created tensions with Ukraine, as Kyiv remains firm in rejecting pressure to accept a deal that would favor Russia. He warned that Russia does not seek peace but rather a temporary ceasefire, which would allow it to regroup and launch new offensives in the future. He stressed the importance of continued Western military and economic support, urging allies to recognize Ukraine as a key pillar of European security.
Slyvchuk highlighted the growing need for Europe to take a more active role in defense and security, citing recent discussions at the Munich Security Conference. He called on European leaders to increase defense spending and maintain military aid to Ukraine, reinforcing that Ukraine’s ability to resist Russian aggression directly contributes to Europe’s stability.
Regarding Spain’s role, Slyvchuk expressed gratitude for the country’s ongoing assistance, particularly in accepting a significant number of Ukrainian refugees. However, he also urged Spain to remain firm on sanctions against Russia and to continue its commitment to military aid.
