On February 24, 2025, Oleksandr Slyvchuk, Coordinator of the Spain and Latin America Cooperation Program, appeared on Tot es mou, a news and discussion program on Catalonia’s public television channel TV3, to provide insights into Ukraine’s ongoing struggle for security and sovereignty.
During the discussion, Slyvchuk emphasized that Ukraine is striving for a stable and lasting peace, rather than a temporary ceasefire that could collapse in a few years. He underscored that Ukraine will not cede territory as part of any agreement, as such concessions would only embolden Russia to rearm and launch further aggression in the future. Both the Ukrainian government and society are united in their determination to defend the country’s sovereignty.
He also addressed Ukraine’s pursuit of security guarantees, stressing that membership in NATO remains the only reliable solution. While bilateral agreements with Western partners provide political, military, and financial support, they do not ensure long-term protection against another Russian invasion in the coming years.
Slyvchuk highlighted the frustration among Ukrainians over the lack of unity within the European Union and the perceived inaction of the West. While Ukraine has fought for EU integration for over a decade, dating back to the 2014 Maidan Revolution, there is growing disappointment with Europe’s slow response and weak defense industry. Ukrainians feel increasingly isolated, especially in contrast to the clear and practical military support provided by some allies.
