TDC President for the International Centre for Defence and Security: Ukraine’s Practical Steps towards NATO

Maksym Skrypchenko, President of the Transatlantic Dialogue Center, provided the commentary to the International Centre for Defence and Security (ICDS), the leading think-tank in Estonia, focusing on Ukraine’s record of adopting NATO standards, and outlining the challenges of doing so in wartime.

As stated by Maksym, though Ukraine’s accession to NATO is “above all, a political process that hinges on the Allies’ collective will”, once the right time comes It needs to be sure that “there are no formal reasons for sceptics to deny an invitation”.

To that end, Maksym produced the oversight on:

  • the established in Ukraine legal framework for implementing NATO standards;
  • the statistics of ongoing reviews of 2 000 NATO military interoperability standards;
  • the increase of trained Ukrainian personnel by European Allies;
  • an introduction of English language requirement into the educational military programs and
  • the challenge to balance efficacy with transparency ambitions.

As fairly noted, while the urgency of weapons’ acquisition continues to persist – “wartime conditions may make black-and-white situations greyer”. Thus, as in any other new shifts, “a delicate balance is to be struck”.
