Russians shelled several border villages in Sumy Oblast. The communities of Sopych, Bachivsk, and Tovstodubove came under mortar fire. No civilians were injured. 


Missile attack on Dnipro, Mykolaiv, Odesa, and Zaporizhzhia. In Dnipro, the rocket hit the downtown and damaged the railway infrastructure of the city.


Denys Prokopenko, the Azov regiment commander, posted a video message about the situation in the Azovstal steel plant, where Ukrainian soldiers are holding all-round defense. He called the situation difficult, confirmed the presence of Russian military in the plant and thanked the whole world for the tremendous support of the Ukrainian garrison. “We continue to hold the defense despite everything,” he highlighted.


On May 4, a Ukrainian journalist Oleksandr Machov was killed in a battle near the city of Izium. Many viewers remember Oleksandr for his high-profile reports. Thus, he was the only journalist to have joined the team that evacuated Ukrainians from Wuhan at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. He also broadcast from Antarctica as a member of the Ukrainian delegation. His last Facebook post includes such words, “I want you to be proud of our army. We are fighting for our country. For our home.”


During May 4, the Ukrainian authorities evacuated 344 citizens from Mariupol and its suburbs. The President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, mentioned that in his message to Ukrainians at the end of the 70th day of the Russo-Ukrainian war. 


The resident of Mariupol named Ihor walked 200 km together with his dog Zhuzha to reach Zaporizhzhia from the blocked city. 


The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) reports that Anatolii Sharii, the blogger, was arrested in Spain on the demand of Ukrainian intelligence. Sharii is accused of treason and the crimes covered by the article 161 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violations of citizens’ equality based on their racial or ethnical identity, religious convictions, disability, or other characteristics). The arrest was possible due to the SSU’s cooperation with the National police in Spain and the office of the attaché for the MIA of Spain in Ukraine.


During May 4, the occupiers shelled Hirske and Komyshuvakha villages as well as the cities of Severodonetsk, Novodruzhesk, and Lysychansk, Luhansk Oblast. Five civilians died from the shrapnel wounds they had suffered because of shelling.


Ukrainian firefighters localized a forest fire near the checkpoint “Dityatki” in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. There is no risk of fire spreading, but extinguishing is complicated because Russian soldiers had mined the forest during the occupation of the ChNPP. Here and here are photos from the scene. 


The global platform “United24” launched at the initiative of the President Volodymyr Zelenskyy began to work in Ukraine. Through the website, everyone can donate to help the healthcare system overcome the consequences of the war. 


In the temporarily occupied city of Enerhodar, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, the TPP stopped working. The mayor Dmytro Orlov explains this is a necessity; the plant is out of coil, whose regular supply is impossible because of occupation.


The Ombudsman Liudmyla Denisova tells about “filtration” camps in Bezimenne and Kozatske villages, Novoazovsk Rayon.

They are located in the school and in the club, supervised permanently by Russian soldiers. People sleep on the floor in corridors. They are fed with balanda (prison food; very thin meatless soup). The only available hygiene tool is a sink with cold water, one for hundreds of people. The men are beaten and tortured for any disobedience. 

In the school in Bezimenne, the first case of tuberculosis has been registered; therefore, the occupants turned the school gym into an isolation unit, where they are keeping a large amount of people. In the Kozatske camp, a man died because the occupiers had refused to call an ambulance for him. 

In addition, the men have been informed they will take part in the “parade” on May 9 in Mariupol as “captives.” 


Captain Sviatoslav Palamar, the deputy regiment commander of Azov, who is defending Mariupol, posted a video message.

We are calling on the global community to evacuate the civilians. I personally am addressing the Supreme Commander with a request to take care of the wounded soldiers, who die in terrible pain because of inappropriate treatment. Make it possible to take the bodies of the warriors, so that Ukrainians can pay respect to their heroes. Respond as appropriate to the critical satiation, where the enemy is not following any ethical norms, conventions, or laws, destroying people in front of the whole world, guided by permissiveness and impunity!”


Ukraine is ready to discontinue the transit of Russian gas through its territory if European countries agree on refusing it, the head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy proclaims.  

It is noteworthy that the transit of Russian gas to Europe through Ukraine is in process, notwithstanding the war. This is happening because of the transit treaty between Naftogaz and Gazprom, which was signed for 5 years in the end of 2019. 


Hanna Ivanivna, the retiree who came out to meet Ukrainian soldiers with a red Bolshevik flag, curses the Russian army for ruining her home.

Notwithstanding the propaganda that had been spread in the neighborhood, her son did not take Hanna Ivanivna to Russia, and she realized that Russian occupiers were shelling her home. 

According to Hanna Ivanivna, she came in front of Ukrainian warriors, having mistook them for occupiers. She was worried about her life and trying to “pacify” them with the Bolshevik flag, so that they “did not destroy” the village as well as Ukraine. Now, she is feeling like a “betrayer.”

It is worth recalling that Russian social nets spread the video where the old lady was meeting “Ukrainian punishers” with a red flag. The occupiers created a figure of a woman seeking to reunite with Russia and restore the USSR.


66% of Europeans support the accession of Ukraine to the European Union.

According to the survey, 89% of Europeans sympathize with Ukrainians, 88% favor inviting the refugees to the EU, and 80% approve of supporting Ukraine financially.

“I had never seen death before the war. I was an ambulance worker. But now, in 2022, it hurts to see people dying on my hands from purulent wounds because the lack of antibiotics,” the physician who is aiding the wounded at Azovstal tells. 


Mariupol authorities received videos from filtration camps Russian occupiers had organized in Bezimenne village, which are a true ghetto for the city residents. The occupiers deported about two thousand men from the districts of Guglino, Myrny, and Volonterivka; they are kept in filtration camps in Bezimenne and Kozatske.


Having ruined Mariupol, Russian occupiers began to destroy road signs in Ukrainian and replace them with Russian equivalents.
