Ukraine Clarity: Debunking Myths and Misinformation in Germany

3 MB

The handbook “Ukraine Clarity: Debunking Myths and Misinformation in Germany” aims to confront and dispel widespread propaganda narratives that have permeated German society, contributing to reluctance to support Ukraine. By bridging gaps in understanding Ukraine’s history and culture, the handbook provides factual insights to counter misinformation.

In its first chapter, the handbook tackles widespread misconceptions related to the current war, notably the Russian occupation of Crimea, the history of Ukraine-Crimea-Russia relations, and the events leading up to the war in the East of Ukraine following the Revolution of Dignity. It also dismantles myths surrounding alleged Ukrainian atrocities and addresses recent propaganda efforts to undermine Ukrainian leadership and its allies in the West.

The second chapter focuses on the socio-economic repercussions of the conflict, highlighting responses such as international sanctions and energy diversification in reaction to Russian aggression. It also explores issues of democracy, countering the portrayal of Ukraine as a corrupt state with autocratic tendencies.

The third chapter dives into the historical roots of the conflict, debunking notions of Ukrainians and Russians as “brotherly nations” and addressing misrepresentations of Ukrainian culture. It also prompts reflection on German historical responsibility toward Eastern Europe after World War II. Moreover, it addressed Russian attempts to portray Ukraine as a Nazi-state and a misconception about Mikhail Gorbachev as a clearly positive historical figure that gave Ukraine its independence.

This handbook serves as a resource for policymakers seeking to educate and rally support for Ukraine’s struggle for independence. By providing a comprehensive view of Ukraine’s history and current context, it aims to foster a renewed appreciation and understanding of the nation among its readers.

This project was prepared by the Transatlantic Dialogue Center in collaboration with VoxCheck.

The handbook is a dynamic resource that is continually updated and enriched with new material and visual information.
