Ukrainian Civil Society Meets Future Journalists in Chile

On April 9, 2025, representatives of the Transatlantic Dialogue Center and the Human Rights Center ZMINA held a discussion with journalism students at Universidad Diego Portales in Santiago, Chile. The conversation offered a unique opportunity to present Ukraine’s current reality to a new generation of communicators in Latin America.

The dialogue focused on the ongoing war in Ukraine, its impact on human rights, and the ways in which Russian disinformation continues to distort the global narrative. Ukrainian experts highlighted how Russia manipulates historical facts, using emotionally charged topics to justify aggression and sow confusion abroad. Specific attention was paid to contested episodes from Ukraine’s past that are frequently exploited in pro-Kremlin propaganda, and the importance of historical literacy in countering such distortions.

The Ukrainian experts also described the daily reality for young people in Ukraine living under wartime conditions. They spoke about how the war has reshaped the lives, priorities, and mental health of Ukraine’s youth, as well as the sense of resilience and responsibility that has emerged among a new generation.

This meeting was part of the broader effort to build bridges between Ukrainian civil society and academic communities in Latin America. We deeply appreciate the thoughtful engagement of the students at Universidad Diego Portales and look forward to further academic exchanges across the region.
