On 26 February 2026, the Transatlantic Dialogue Center (TDC) held a meeting in Madrid with representatives of the Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies (IEEE) to discuss the prospects for strengthening Ukraine–Spain security cooperation and to exchange assessments of the evolving security environment.

The meeting brought together Alina Rohach (Project Manager of the Spain and Latin America Cooperation Program at the TDC), Bohdana Batsko (Project Assistant of the Spain and Latin America Cooperation Program at the TDC), Victor Mario Bados Nieto (Director of the IEEE), and Ignacio Fuente Cobo (Senior Analyst at IEEE).

The discussion included an overview of IEEE’s analytical work and areas of focus, as well as reflections on last year’s visit of Victor Mario Bados Nieto, Ignacio Fuente Cobo, and other Spanish colleagues to Kyiv — a timely and valuable engagement that helped deepen dialogue on defence and strategic priorities. Previous coverage of that visit is available in our updates on the Spanish delegation’s strategic talks with Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense leadership, the meeting with Oleksandr Lytvynenko (Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine), and the delegation’s exchange with analysts from the Come Back Alive Initiatives Center.

Building on this continuity, the Madrid conversation also covered Ukraine’s outlook for peace and negotiations, the trajectory of the war, the operational situation on the front lines, and the critical condition of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The meeting reaffirmed the importance of sustained expert-level exchange and practical cooperation between Ukrainian and Spanish partners as Europe confronts a deteriorating security landscape.
