TDC President for Anadolu: The Risk of Sidelining Ukraine in Diplomatic Negotiations

As diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war intensify, there is growing concern that Ukraine’s interests may be compromised in the pursuit of swift, transactional agreements. In an op-ed for Anadolu Agency, Maksym Skrypchenko, President of the Transatlantic Dialogue Center, highlights the risks of excluding Kyiv from crucial negotiations.

Skrypchenko underscores that Ukraine’s fight is not just about territory but an existential struggle for sovereignty. He warns that recent diplomatic moves—such as U.S.-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia—may prioritize expediency over Ukraine’s long-term security. The absence of Ukrainian officials in these early discussions raises concerns that a potential agreement could lack the necessary guarantees to deter future Russian aggression.

There is a notable contrast between past and present U.S. approaches to the conflict. While a previous administration followed a risk-averse strategy aimed at containing escalation, the current administration appears more inclined toward pragmatic concessions. This shift, Skrypchenko argues, risks reducing Ukraine’s fate to a bargaining chip in broader geopolitical dealings.

Ukraine and its allies insist that “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine” must remain a guiding principle in any sort of negotiations so that any peace process secures the country’s future rather than merely halting hostilities.
