In a collaboration aimed at broadening the global understanding of Russia’s war in Ukraine, the Transatlantic Dialogue Center’s (TDC) Spain and Latin America Cooperation Program has partnered with the Argentine digital media outlet Politicly to publish a joint article titled “Ukraine: Beyond International Summits.” The article challenges the notion that peace is simply the absence of military action, arguing that for Ukraine, any settlement that leaves injustice unaddressed is not peace — it is occupation under another name.

Citing Nobel Peace Prize laureate Oleksandra Matviichuk, the authors argue that “occupation is just another form of war. It doesn’t reduce human suffering — it merely renders it invisible.” They emphasize that a lasting and just peace after Russia’s aggression must include security guarantees, legal accountability for war crimes, and reparations.

Beyond the diplomatic talk, the article shines a light on the crucial role of Ukrainian civil society. It notes that while international attention often fixates on high-level negotiations, organizations on the ground are quietly working to document war crimes, offer psychological support to victims, and lead reconstruction efforts. This active civic engagement, the authors point out, is the true backbone of Ukraine’s resilience and a core pillar for rebuilding a democratic society.

In their conclusion, the authors warn against reducing Ukraine’s war of survival to a geopolitical bargaining chip. A peace that legitimizes territorial conquest and rewards impunity would not only fail Ukraine — it would undermine the entire framework of international law and security.

We appreciate Politicly’s dedication to highlighting Ukrainian perspectives and ensuring they reach audiences throughout Latin America.
