In June 2026, the Transatlantic Dialogue Center (TDC) supported expert meetings in Kyiv and a three-day training led by Margarita Griesbach<\/strong>, a Mexican specialist in child testimony<\/em>. The programme introduced a neurocognitive model for obtaining children\u2019s testimonies<\/em> to Ukrainian police officers, prosecutors, and psychologists working with child victims and witnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mexico\u2019s own long-standing experience with disappearances and child-protection challenges made this exchange especially relevant, while Ukraine\u2019s wartime context added another layer of urgency to the discussion on child testimony, trauma, and access to justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During an earlier advocacy visit to Mexico by colleagues from the Spain and Latin America Cooperation Program<\/em>, TDC met Griesbach and discussed shared priorities in child-friendly justice. TDC then helped facilitate her visit to Ukraine by coordinating with Ukrainian partners and supporting the practical organisation of the Kyiv programme. Griesbach\u2019s longstanding professional interest in Ukraine also made the cooperation a natural step forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme began on 8 June 2026<\/strong> with consultations on protecting children affected by Russia\u2019s war. At Save Ukraine, Myroslava Kharchenko<\/strong>, Head of the organisation\u2019s Legal Department<\/em>, outlined obstacles to returning abducted children, the need for stronger coordination with Ukrainian institutions, and the importance of international advocacy and state support for returned children and their families. The discussion also addressed how Russian propaganda and prolonged occupation can affect children\u2019s perceptions and behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same day, TDC and partners met with the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine<\/strong>, \u0441\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0434 \u044f\u043a\u0438\u0445 Olesia Voloshyna<\/strong>, Deputy Head of the Department for Children’s Protection and Combating Domestic Violence<\/em>\u0442\u0430 Alina Bukalo<\/strong>, Head of the Unit for Children’s Protection and Combating Domestic Violence at the Poltava Regional Prosecutor\u2019s Office<\/em>. The exchange focused on mechanisms for recording children\u2019s testimonies, their practical limitations, legal nuances, and Ukrainian and Mexican approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A separate meeting was also held with Daria Herasymchuk<\/strong>, Presidential Commissioner for Children\u2019s Rights and Child Rehabilitation<\/em>, with the participation of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mexico to Ukraine<\/em> Audencio Contreras Gonzalez<\/strong>. Participants discussed ways to deepen Mexico\u2013Ukraine cooperation, including Mexico\u2019s possible contribution<\/em> of specialised expertise to Ukraine\u2019s response to war-related crimes against children.<\/p>\n\n\n

On 10\u201312 June 2026<\/strong>, the programme concluded with Griesbach\u2019s three-day training<\/strong>. The opening session featured remarks by \u0410\u043b\u0456\u043d\u0430 \u0420\u043e\u0433\u0430\u0447<\/strong> (Project manager of the Spain and Latin America Cooperation Program at TDC)<\/em>, Daria Herasymchuk<\/strong>, Ambassador Audencio Contreras Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong>\u0442\u0430 Olesia Voloshyna<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The model is based on a simple principle:<\/strong> the justice system must adapt to a child\u2019s developmental capacities, not vice versa. It promotes free narrative testimony, reduces stress and the risk of re-traumatisation, and preserves safeguards for admissible evidence, including proper recording, spontaneity, protection from external influence, and due process standards. The approach is universal, reflecting neurocognitive patterns of child development regardless of language or cultural background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kyiv programme was implemented in cooperation with the Office of the Presidential Commissioner for Children\u2019s Rights and Child Rehabilitation, the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, and the Training Center of Prosecutors of Ukraine, with additional support from private sponsors and Margarita Griesbach.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
